Privacy Policy
Effective date: August 2, 2026
Makuro is built to keep your health data yours. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have. In short: your day-to-day tracking lives on your device, we don’t sell your data, and we only send data off your phone when it’s needed to give you a feature you asked for.
Who we are
Makuro (“we”, “us”) is a service of DeepArch Co., Ltd. (DeepArch株式会社), a company registered in Japan. You can reach us at [email protected].
Information we collect
Information you enter
To do its job, Makuro stores what you log: foods and meals, body weight, and the profile details that drive your targets (such as height, age range, sex, activity level, and goal). This is stored on your device.
Apple Health (HealthKit)
With your explicit permission, Makuro can read and write body-weight data to Apple Health so your weight stays in sync across your apps, and — if you opt in — read your daily activity energy (from Apple Watch or iPhone) to inform your starting expenditure estimate. Data obtained from Apple Health is used only to provide Makuro’s features — never for advertising or marketing, and it is never sold or shared with third parties for their own purposes. You can turn this off any time in the Health app or iOS Settings.
Meal photos
When you log a meal by photo, the image is sent to our AI provider — Anthropic (the Claude API) — through our secure backend, to identify the foods and estimate portions. The result is returned to you to review and save. The photo is used only to produce that result: it is processed under Anthropic’s API terms (under which API data is not used to train their models) and is not stored on our servers after your request is handled. If you don’t use photo logging, no images leave your device.
Diagnostics
Makuro uses Apple’s built-in App Analytics and crash reporting, provided through the App Store and Xcode. This information is aggregated by Apple and does not identify you to us. We do not use third-party analytics or advertising SDKs, and there are no advertising identifiers.
How we use your information
- To provide the core features: logging, calorie and macro targets, and trends.
- To personalize your targets to your own data over time.
- To respond to you when you contact support.
We do not sell your personal data, and we do not use your health data for advertising.
Who we share it with
We share data only with service providers that help us run the app:
- Anthropic — processes the meal photos you submit (the Claude API), via our backend, to return food recognition.
- Apple — provides the App Store and aggregated analytics and crash reporting, each under Apple’s own terms.
- Our backend hosting — runs the secure service that relays photo requests to Anthropic; it does not retain your images.
- When required by law, or to protect the rights and safety of our users and others.
Where your data lives & security
Your tracking data is stored on your device and, so it survives device changes and reinstalls, synced through your private iCloud account using Apple’s CloudKit. That copy lives in your iCloud and is governed by Apple’s terms; we cannot access it and keep no separate copy. We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect data in transit and at rest, though no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure.
Your choices and rights
- Edit or delete your logged data within the app at any time.
- Revoke Apple Health access in the Health app or iOS Settings.
- Depending on where you live — for example under Japan’s Act on the Protection of Personal Information (APPI), the EU/UK GDPR, or California’s CCPA — you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or export your personal data. Contact us to exercise them.
Our website
This website (separate from the app) uses Cloudflare Web Analytics — a privacy-first, cookieless analytics service — to understand aggregate traffic such as page views, referrers, and visitor countries. It sets no cookies, does not track you across sites, and does not collect information that identifies you. That’s why you don’t see a cookie banner.
Children
Makuro is intended for users aged 17 and older. It is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 17.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected here with a new effective date.
